Awareness on violence against women is the highest in the Eastern Development Region than in other development regions of the country, a report said.

According to Anbeshi, a yearbook of the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC), 66 percent of the total cases of violence against women in the country were registered in the Eastern Development Region, while only one percent of such cases was registered in the Western Development Region.

Of the 1,569 cases of violence against women collected by WOREC, the Central Development Region accounted for 12 percent, while the Mid-Western and Far-Western development regions accounted for 11 and 10 percent respectively. The yearbook includes cases of violence against women from July 2010 to June 2011.

WOREC Chairperson Renu Rajbhandari said that a large number of cases was registered in the Eastern Development Region as the region has a number of support mechanisms established by the government and non-government organisations and women are much more empowered and conscious about their rights.

“But the Western Development Region recorded the least number of such cases as there is lack of support mechanisms for women both from government and non-government organisations,” she said.

Rajbhandari said the government should establish support mechanisms in different parts of the country and launch more programmes to make people aware of the violence in rural parts of the country.

The report also states that the rate of domestic violence has increased by four percent while the rate of rape cases decreased by one percent in 2011 in comparison to the previous year. The report also recommended various organisations working for women to continue efforts to register all cases of domestic violence in order to exert pressure on the state and reduce violence against women.
