Praveen Dixit serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Commerce for Industry Analysis. In this position, he is responsible for economic analysis, data collection and dissemination, and trade policy activities assigned to Manufacturing and Services.

He joined the Department of Commerce in 2005 as the Director of the Office of Competition and Economic Analysis. The Office was established in 2005 to provide information and analysis to promote the global competitiveness of U.S. industry. Under his leadership, the Office undertook several new initiatives, including a regulatory reform program designed to ensure that regulations meet their human health and safety goals without being unduly burdensome to U.S. industry.

Prior to this appointment, Dixit was the Chief of the Asia and Western Hemisphere Branch and the Coordinator of the WTO Project at the Economic Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. In this capacity, he was responsible for providing guidance on Departmental decisions on issues of relevance to Asian and Latin American Agriculture and analytically supporting the Doha Round of trade negotiations.

Dixit also spent three years in Nepal under USAID’s economic liberalization project and helped introduce several major policy reform initiatives. Many of these initiatives— the Value Added Tax, establishment of the Nepal Stock Exchange, and introduction of legislation to support healthy business practices—have been instrumental to Nepal’s economic growth during the last 15 years.

Originally from Nepal, he obtained his PhD from Purdue University.
